How to measure Bathroom Vanity

Choosing the right bathroom vanity starts with accurate measurements. Whether you’re upgrading to a modern bathroom vanity or replacing an existing piece, taking the right steps ensures your new vanity fits seamlessly into your space.

Step 1: Measure Your Available Width

  • Use a tape measure to record the width of the wall where the vanity will be installed.
  • Standard vanity widths range from 24 inches up to 84 inches.
  • Leave at least a few inches of clearance on each side if your vanity is near a wall or door.
  • For wall-to-wall installations, most O&N Floating Vanity models are intentionally designed approximately 1/8" to 1/4" smaller than the listed nominal size to allow for easier installation. In many cases, additional filler space is not required.
  • For frameless vanity designs such as the Monterey Floating Vanity, make sure there are no bathroom door trims or moldings extending in front of the vanity area. If the vanity will be installed directly against side walls, the walls should also be reasonably straight to ensure proper fitment and alignment.

Step 2: Determine the Depth

  • Vanity depth usually ranges between 18–21 inches.
  • Our bathroom vanities are often 19.5 inches deep, making them ideal for both small and large bathrooms.
  • Be sure to check door swings, walkways, and shower enclosures so the vanity doesn’t obstruct movement.

Step 3: Measure the Height

  • Traditional vanities are around 32-36 inches tall, while “comfort height” or floating vanities are typically 34–36 inches from the floor to the top of the countertop.
  • For floating vanities, installation height can be adjusted to fit your household’s needs.
  • For taller homeowners, selected O&N Floating Vanity models can also be upgraded from our standard 2" countertop to a 4" thick countertop option. This increases the overall freestanding vanity height from approximately 36" to 38", creating a more comfortable everyday experience for taller users while also giving the vanity a more substantial luxury appearance.

Step 4: Check Plumbing Locations

  • Note where your water supply lines and drain are located.
  • Bathroom vanities with drawers often include cutouts to conceal plumbing, but aligning with your current setup can simplify installation.
  • For our trough sink models in 60", 72", and 84" sizes, the plumbing location is offset toward the left side of the vanity. Make sure to review your plumbing placement before ordering to ensure compatibility with the sink and drawer configuration.
  • If your plumbing does not align with the vanity layout, a contractor or plumber may need to relocate the drain and water supply lines during installation.
  • If your plumbing setup is difficult to work with or requires additional flexibility, we recommend choosing vanity models that include cabinet doors rather than full drawer configurations. Door-style vanities, such as our Belgian Bathroom Vanity collections, typically provide more open interior space and easier plumbing access during installation.

Step 5: Consider Clearance and Functionality

  • Allow for door and drawer clearance so your vanity opens fully without hitting walls or other fixtures.
  • If placing the vanity in a corner, double-check that the door swing won’t interfere with handles or cabinets.

Step 6: Factor in Countertop and Sink

  • The countertop typically extends approximately ½" to 1" beyond the front of the vanity cabinet, with a slight 1/8" overhang on both sides.
  • For integrated sinks or double vanities, measure carefully to ensure adequate space, as sink placement and vanity width may also affect the positioning of your mirrors, wall sconces, and overall lighting symmetry.
  • At O&N Floating Vanity, most of our models come standard with a 2" integrated sink countertop. Selected models can also be upgraded by request to a thicker 4" standard sink top or a 5.25" trough sink top configuration. These countertop options will affect the overall installed vanity height, so it is important to consider both cabinet height and countertop thickness during the planning process.

Quick Tips for Floating Vanities

  • Wall-to-wall installation: Installing a floating vanity between two side walls typically provides additional structural support and improved overall stability. This type of installation is especially popular for larger vanity sizes and luxury built-in bathroom designs.
  • Corner installation: Installing the vanity against a side wall or adding additional side support can help increase overall weight capacity and reduce cabinet movement over time. This is particularly helpful for larger stone countertops, double sink configurations, and family bathrooms with heavier daily use.
  • Open-wall floating installations: O&N Floating Vanity cabinets are structurally engineered to support fully floating installations, including layouts without side wall support. Our floating vanities can be installed centered on an open wall or in the middle section of a bathroom layout, provided the wall has proper structural reinforcement. Always confirm with your contractor that sufficient wood studs, blocking, or wall support are installed before mounting the vanity.
  • Verify stud and plumbing locations early: Floating vanities rely heavily on proper wall reinforcement. Before installation, confirm stud locations, drain placement, water supply line positions, and electrical locations for mirrors or lighting. Planning these details early can significantly simplify installation and help avoid modifications later.
